Planned study - This project aims to assess the added value of a gene expression test used in combination with clinical parameters such as age and pathological characteristics to predict the risk of metastasis in melanoma patients. This risk stratification may make it possible to avoid a lymph node biopsy, which would be beneficial for patients, as these biopsies are sometimes associated with adverse effects such as seroma or lymphedema.
The study will attempt to determine whether this test can effectively reduce the number of lymph node biopsies, and to assess the safety and cost-effectiveness of such a strategy. It will rely on a literature review with limited data analysis. It is important to note that the Danish Health Technology Assessment Agency also plans to study this topic. We will try to set up a collaboration to avoid doing the same research twice. If it appears that our Danish colleagues’ study is already well on the way, we will await their results before deciding whether our own study is still useful.
