Ongoing study - Subject of this study is the organisation of family-centred couplet care for preterm newborns and their parents in neonatal services.
Evidence shows that allowing bonding between parents and preterm newborns may improve the baby’s short- and long-term health. Different care models exist to support this bonding, such as couplet care, developmental care, kangaroo or koala care. The effectiveness of these care models will be studied via a literature review.
Strengths and weaknesses in current Belgian organisation and payment system regarding family-centred couplet care will be studied. In addition, current Belgian organisation and funding will be compared with existing best-practices at the international level.
All these elements will be used to formulate recommendations to improve family-centred couplet care for preterm newborns and their parents in neonatal services in Belgium.
