Ongoing study - Mental (in)capacity plays a central and decisive role in healthcare. Many important care related choices are inevitably linked to mental capacity: is a patient capable to give his/her informed consent, is it necessary to assign a legal representative, can a patient make a well balanced request for euthanasia, etc.
Care professionals assess patients’ mental capacity to their best ability, and thereby often rely on their intuition and experience. In the Belgian context, objective assessment tools are rarely used in this assessment. Yet, it is of an utmost importance that the assessment is done in a sound and objective way. This research project identifies healthcare professionals’ and patients’ needs (including barriers and facilitators and tools) in the assessment, support and repairing of mental capacity.
