Study 2016-02 (HSR) Low Back Pain: which care pathway?

On going study - In Belgium, many patients visit their physician for low back pain, a common pathology. This is also a frequent cause of absenteeism at work. Various treatment exist and several initiatives have emerged in the management of chronic pain. However the coordination between the various professionals (general practitioners, physiotherapists, etc.) and settings of care (extra or intra-hospital) is a weak point of the system. Furthermore, these initiatives are sometimes involved too late in the course of the disease.

The aim of this project is to define an optimal care pathway enabling to limit medical but also psycho-social and occupational impacts of low back pain. A review of the literature and a description of the Belgian and international situations will be carried out in order to feed the discussion with the stakeholders of the different health professionals.
This "care pathway" project focuses on the organization of management (which actors have to intervene, when and how). It is linked with another current KCE project 2015-02 whose purpose is to determine the effective therapeutic options and develop clinical recommendations for the treatment of chronic low back pain.
