SYMPOSIUM – 10 years KCE – 'Bridging the gap' – EBM vs. societal expectations

Thursday 12/09/2013 at 13:30
Area 42 / Rue des Palais 46 - Paleizenstraat 46/ 1030 Brussels

Evidence-Based Medicine is featuring ever more prominently in the medical news. Yet our supposedly rational conclusions and recommendations often seem out of step with the vision of clinicians, their patients or the general public. Whether we are talking about sophisticated technological innovations like robotic surgery or alternative medicine, the different viewpoints do not always seem to converge.

What are the underlying psychological and sociological causes of this mismatch?
How to carry out a meaningful dialogue in order to arrive at more widely accepted results?
What are the ethical implications? How far does the responsibility of policy-makers extend and what legitimacy do the arguments of the citizen/patient have?
